She’s almost 90, and her career is enjoying a renaissance, and no doubt her appearance within the Proposal helped immensely. The Academy may actually benefit by fronting the loan till payday for Betty White by getting a ratings bump.

The Betty White SNL was stellar. (Did you see the skit where she yelled “Wizard of …” never mind.) Funny and Saturday Night Live are two things thought now to be mutually exclusive. (It is the truth. The show has been sliding.) The ratings got an remarkable bump too. She thanked her fans for insisting on her appearance, and then called Facebook “a huge waste of time.” A new Facebook group, Getting Betty White to Host the Academy Awards has sprung up as a result.
The Betty White Renaissance
Betty White has actually been a career actress in television and in films for decades. She began in the 1950s, was on the Mary Tyler Moore show in the 70s, Golden Girls within the 80s, and other appearances in between. Her role in the Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock was also well received. She had a series of skits on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and a recurring role on Boston Legal within the last few years.
