Montcoal mine explosion increases questions about Massey Energy

In Montcoal, WV the search for survivors after a mine explosion has been called off. The owner and operator of the Montcoal, West Virginia mine, Massey Energy, has been repeatedly cited for violations of safety protocol. The economy of Montcoal, WV relies heavily on Massey Energy. The city of Montcoal has basically a grocery store, a payday loan store, and several homes. When the Montcoal WV hunt for survivors was called off, 1 was injured, 4 were missing, and 25 were confirmed dead.

There was a severe explosion within the coal mine in Montcoal, WV at 3 p.m. local time on Monday. Communications were knocked out by the methane gas explosion. The search for survivors of the Montcoal, WV, coal mine explosion included specially trained mine disaster dogs. At least seven of the minors were most likely killed while “riding out of the mine on a vehicle”. A roof collapse is not suspected to are a roof collapse. Poisonous and combustible methane gas is instead blamed for the explosion.

Within the last three months, Massey Energy has been cited six times. In the last year, Massey Energy has paid more than $ 380,000 in fines for “repeated serious violations” of safety at the Montcoal, WV coal mine.

Montcoal set to receive federal aid

The president has offered federal assistance to the rescue effort. Red Cross is also sending mental health services to the “very rural” area. Local churches and civic groups are also providing food and other support services to the Montcoal, WV, community. Massey Energy has confirmed seven of the 25 deaths from the coal mine explosion. Massey Energy released a statement by their C.E.O. stating “Our top priority is the safety of our miners and the well-being of their families”.
