Facebook search to be powered by Bing

Microsoft and Facebook made one big joint announcement today. The two companies will partner up via Bing. Personalized search results in Bing will be run by Facebook. More specifically, your network on Facebook. Microsoft is hoping the Facebook partnership will help it overtake Google.

Facebook partnership for Bing

Both Facebook and Bing can be integrating each other into search outcomes. Friday there had been a press announcement from Microsoft and Facebook where the two biggest features were announced. Bing will use your Facebook profile to give you individuals you most likely know when you are searching for a person. This had been given the name “social distance.” It needs your friends list in order to work correctly. Second, Bing will rate search results based on what your friends and social networking have “liked” on Facebook. You can’t use the individual ranking of search results until you’ve linked your Facebook account to Bing. This can be done with Facebook connect.

Microsoft is intending to compete with Google is making the Bing integration with Facebook like this. Bing is also at the moment integrating with Yahoo! search results. It will be a long fight for Google and Bing. The fight won’t be settled quickly. Following the announcement, Microsoft shares rose 65 cents apiece.

Turning off of the Facebook integration

If you do not want your Facebook and Bing search engine results integrated, the businesses are offering a way to turn off the linking feature. No specifics have come out yet. It will soon though.
