Movement for financial education in educational facilities needs momentum

Some individuals believe that a national financial turmoil begins at home. For generations, individuals within the United States have learned about cash on their own. This has led to personal hardship and detrimental effects to society at large. As the country struggles to emerge from the worst downturn in the economy since the Great Depression, a movement is afoot for making financial literacy schooling a part of growing up.

A financial reform is in place

Educating on finances is an integral part of the 2010 financial reform law. An Office of Financial Literacy had been formed with the law. The intent of the Office of Financial Literacy is to educate students and consumers about financial education and money.

Monetary literacy education is good PR

The private sector is recognizing the glaring need for financial literacy education as a PR opportunity. One company has gotten on board already, Genworth Financial, which is doing what it can to educate personal finances in over 300 high schools across the country. Earlier this year Visa, Inc. introduced “Financial Football,” a free online game that teaches children about money using personal financial decisions to influence the outcome of football action. Additionally, American Express began a site called "Currency" in their try to help the financial issues in our country.

No place to be found

When it comes to financial literacy education in schools, teachers have their work cut out for them, as outlined by Dan Kadlec at MoneyWatch. Kadlec was told in a recent Financial Literacy National Educators Conference, that current teachers only contain what is on standardized tests and just how to make those scores higher. Right now financial literacy and personal finance are subjects that don’t show up on the tests many state governments give students in order to evaluate teachers and schools.
